Dogs do not pull because they are dominant, stubborn or badly behaved. They pull because pulling works. Understand the mechanics and the fix becomes obvious — and it has very little to do with correcting the dog.
The uncomfortable truth: you taught it
Not deliberately. Here is the loop: your dog wants to reach a smell forty feet ahead. They lean into the collar. You follow, because you are attached to them and walking that way anyway. Your dog arrives at the smell.
Pulling produced the outcome the dog wanted. That is the whole training mechanism, and it runs a few hundred times before anyone decides there is a problem.
There is also a reflex involved. Opposition reflex is the tendency of most animals, humans included, to push back against steady pressure. Pull a dog’s collar backwards and their instinct is to lean forward into it. A tight lead therefore creates the exact behaviour it is trying to stop.
Why a flat collar makes it worse
A collar sits at the neck, directly in line with the dog’s centre of mass. When they lean forward against it, every ounce of their weight goes into forward motion. You are, mechanically, harnessing a sled dog.
It is also the least comfortable place to take that load. Sustained pressure on the trachea in a hard-pulling dog is a genuine welfare concern, particularly in flat-faced breeds and in dogs with any history of collapsing trachea.
What a front-clip harness actually does
A front-clip harness moves the attachment point to the centre of the chest. When your dog drives forward, the leash is now off-axis: instead of translating into forward motion, the force rotates them back towards you.
Nothing tightens. Nothing pinches. There is no correction and no discomfort. The dog simply loses the mechanical advantage that made pulling productive, and — the part people find surprising — most dogs stop trying within a few minutes, because the strategy has stopped working.
The training half, in four steps
- Reward the slack lead, not the dog’s position. Every few steps the lead stays loose, mark it and treat. You are paying for the absence of tension.
- Stop dead when the lead goes tight. Do not yank, do not talk. Become an anchor. The moment the lead loosens, walk on.
- Let sniffing be the reward. Walk to within a few feet of the interesting thing on a loose lead, then release them to it. Now the loose lead is what produces the smell.
- Be boring and consistent for two weeks. This is the whole difficulty. Every walk where pulling works undoes several where it did not.
Equipment that helps, and equipment that does not

Putting it together
The setup that works for most dogs is unglamorous: a well-fitted front-clip harness, a fixed five-foot lead, and two weeks of paying attention.
